Click to Cancel has passed through
the Senate πŸ₯³

Hey Reader,

After more than a year of campaigning, Click to Cancel has finally passed the Senate. πŸ†

You and thousands signed my petition calling out subscription services, and yesterday the Competition and Consumer Amendment (Unfair Trading Practices) Bill passed the senate. WOOHOO!!!

I want to thank you, for telling me you were fed up with subscription traps, where signing up was easy, but getting out was filled with endless hoops, challenges and "confirmshaming." Looking at you Amazon πŸ‘€.

The legislation introduces stronger protections for consumers, including making it easier to cancel subscriptions and crack down on drip pricing.

It will come into affect on 1st of July 2027, but sadly my amendments didn't make it through πŸ˜” (More on it below).

While I'm pleased to see these reforms move forward, the job isn't finished.

I proposed amendments that would have:

  • Required companies to remind consumers before a free trial automatically became a paid subscription; and
  • Stopped businesses from forcing people to hand over unnecessary personal information just to complete an online purchase.

Unfortunately, Labor, the Libs, and to no-ones surprise One Nation voted against these common-sense improvements.

I'd like to sincerely thank The Greens and Senator David Pocock for supporting stronger consumer protections, and a special thank you to Senator Nick McKim for moving my amendments while I'm still navigating new motherhood and unable to travel to Canberra.

Although I couldn't be in the chamber, I'm incredibly proud to have helped spark this reform and to see Australians receive stronger protections against subscription traps.

This is proof that when people speak up and refuse to accept unfair practices, change is possible.

Thank you again Reader, and everyone who signed the petition, shared your experiences and supported this campaign.

We're making progress, but there's still more work to do.

Kind Regards,
Fatima Payman
